Overview 504 & IEP Process

Houston Public Schools Special Education Process
Houston Public School District provides the full continuum of special education services to all students with disabilities from ages birth through 22. Special education services address the individual needs of the student based on their disability related needs. Special education services are provided at no cost and can include specialized instruction, related services, supplies, materials, modifications and accommodations. All special education services are determined through a Special Education Evaluation and the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Related Services support the student in benefitting from their specialized instruction program. Related services include:
- Adaptive equipment and/or technology
- Audiology
- Occupational therapy
- Orientation and mobility services
- Physical therapy
- Psychological services
- School social work services

Child Find
Child Find (34 CFR § 300.111 Child Find) refers to a federal law that requires that evaluations of children suspected of having a disability are not delayed or denied. If a student is suspected of having a disability, the student should be referred for evaluation for special education services. The evaluation process supersedes the RtI model for students that need evaluation. HISD has systems in place to locate, evaluate, and identify students with disabilities transitioning from Early Childhood Agencies (ECI) and those ages 3 to 21. If you suspect that your child has a disability, please contact your child’s school or Evaluation Services.
